Statement of Need

The Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are lifelong diseases characterized by alternating flare-ups and remissions. These chronic, progressive disorders of uncertain etiology affect men and women equally and usually present in early adulthood. It is estimated that more than 1 million people in the United States suffer from IBD, with more than 50,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
